About
What is LinuxLove.info?
Hi, I’m Mike, and I love Linux.
Specifically, I’m a big fan of Ubuntu, its variants, and derivatives (Linux Mint being my personal favorite). This site is a place where I can celebrate and share my love for Linux with (hopefully one day) my fellow Linux Lovers. I plan to post tutorials, tips, tricks, and other fun Ubuntu-related tidbits. I also welcome and encourage others to become involved, so if you’re interested, drop me a line.
I have spent many a sleepless night tinkering around with Ubuntu until it was thoroughly broken, and then subsequently spending the following day tinkering it back to life. This site seeks to centralize some of the more complicated, obscure, or particularly useful things I have come across.
This site is completely financed out of my pocket as an expression of my love of Linux, Ubuntu, and its community. If you find something helpful, clicking a few ads would really be appreciated and help secure the future of this site.
Also please note that I’m going to assume (at least in my posts) that the reader has a basic knowledge of Ubuntu, the terminal, copy-n-paste, and some other concepts. If you’ve never even opened up a terminal before, a lot of the information here probably won’t help you too much.
FAQs (not really, actually)
1. What’s with the .info domain?
Well, there isn’t going to be very much “commercial” content here and likely a plethora of info, so it fits, if you ask me. Linuxlove.com is also registered already ;[.
2. But Mike, why are you doing this?! What about the extremely helpful community wikis, forums, and countless other sites of this nature that already exist?! Do we really need another one?
I have learned an immense amount of stuff from the forums, wikis, and guides, and have even contributed a bit to them myself. I find, however, that in many cases, they are disorganized, out-of-date, or completely inaccurate. Another issue I notice is that people who have really great and helpful things to share with the community shy away from the almost chaotic environment of the forums or have their posts hopelessly buried by the countless compiz-related threads. This is only to be expected in such an active, thriving, and relatively new community. However, this site is an attempt to centralize some of the more helpful and/or complicated pieces of info I’ve come across. It’s also an attempt at giving something back to the community that has taught me so much and given me so much enjoyment (for free or close to free).
3. You wouldn’t happen to have long hair…would you?
Why yes, I would.
4. Why Ubuntu?
There are lots and lots of distros out there, and if Ubuntu isn’t your cup-o-tea, there’s bound to be one out there that tickles your fancy (check out distrowatch.com). However, there’s a couple of reason why I think Ubuntu is one of the most solid distros. First of all, it’s arguably the most widely used desktop distro available. Because of this, there is a tremendous community presence and lots of people using their free time to improve things. Ubuntu is also based on Debian, which besides being fairly stable, makes use of .deb software packages and a vast apt repository. This makes finding and installing software on Ubuntu almost too simple. Finally, with the financial backing of Canonical and skilled developers creating release after release on a set cycle, it’s likely that we’re going to see some of the neatest Linux stuff ever coming out of the Ubuntu dev team and community. Ubuntu has already done a fantastic job of bringing Linux out from underground and into the mainstream eye and continues to do so everyday.
